I’ve been questioning a lot of things lately. I don’t think that’s a bad thing – I think that where we grow and stretch is in the asking. If life is in the details, then maybe the lessons are in the decoding.
That may be a thought for another day, but one of the things I’ve been questioning lately is what level of control I actually have over the circumstances of my life.
I’m not a fool – I understand that I can’t control everything that happens to me. What I mean, though, is how much control I have over the outcome of the circumstances. And from that point on, where does the ripple go?
Here’s what I know: we don’t really know anything. We don’t know what life’s going to hand us day in and day out. We don’t know what direction any challenge that we’re facing will take. We don’t actually have control over that at all. So what do we have control over?
Who we are at the end of the road.
Challenges are going to change us. It’s the nature of life and the nature of struggle. That leaves you with more control than you might have thought. You have control over who you become.
You can choose to flow with change and allow struggles to leave you weak, despondent, wary or discouraged. Or you can choose to fight against the struggle and become strong, confident, hopeful and courageous.
And that change has more of an effect than you can ever imagine. Because when the next struggle arises (and arise it will), you will be a much different person – ready to face the storm with confidence, or ready to let go and allow it to drown you. That’s where the ripple comes in.
And it all starts today. Right now. With each little challenge. You can choose to be brave, choose to stand in the light. You can choose who you will become at the end of the road.
